A writer needs to do some research right? I decided to spend some time listening to various podcasts that fell within the fantasy and scifi genres according to various searches and reviews. Here is the list of the stories that seem to be trending. I sampled each of these and all have a different take on storytelling. Well worth checking them out!
- The Magnus Archives - A horror-fantasy anthology podcast in which the archivists of the Magnus Institute record statements from people who have experienced the supernatural.
- Welcome to Night Vale - A surreal, absurdist podcast that takes the form of a radio broadcast from the fictional town of Night Vale, where strange and impossible things happen on a daily basis.
- The Adventure Zone - A comedic Dungeons & Dragons podcast in which three brothers and their father embark on a quest through a fantasy world filled with magic, monsters, and mayhem.
- The Bright Sessions - A sci-fi/fantasy podcast that follows a group of people with supernatural abilities as they attend therapy sessions with a psychologist who specializes in helping those with extraordinary powers.
- Wolf 359 - A sci-fi/fantasy podcast set on a space station orbiting the star Wolf 359, in which the crew faces off against various threats, including mysterious alien transmissions and a rogue AI.
- The Once and Future Nerd - A comedic high fantasy podcast that follows three teenagers from our world who find themselves transported to a magical realm where they become embroiled in a civil war.
- The Leviathan Chronicles - A sci-fi/fantasy podcast that follows a group of immortals who are locked in a centuries-old conflict with a shadowy organization known as Leviathan.
- Tumanbay - A historical fantasy podcast set in a fictional city that resembles the Ottoman Empire, in which political intrigue, religious conflict, and supernatural forces collide.
- Ars Paradoxica - A sci-fi/fantasy podcast in which a time traveler finds herself stranded in the 1940s and becomes embroiled in a government conspiracy involving the manipulation of time itself.
- The Penumbra Podcast - An anthology podcast that features both sci-fi and fantasy stories, including the ongoing series "Juno Steel" (a cyberpunk detective story) and "The Second Citadel" (a high fantasy epic).
My favorite of the stories above is probably Tumanbay or Wolf 359. I'll probably listen to more of each however. Each of these podcasts offers its own unique take on their genre, so hopefully there's something here for every listener!
